A VISIT TO PALEOPOLIS

1. THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE SITE

In recent years, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu has realized at the archaeological site of the Paleopolis baths the following enhancement projects:

1994 – 1995: “Consolidation works at Paleopolis Corfu “.
2002 – 2005: “Enhancement-Upgrading of Expropriated Archaeological Sites at Paleopolis Corfu”, 3rd Community Support Framework.
2006 – 2009: “Conservation of Mosaics at the Roman Baths of Paleopolis (the Kasfiki plot)”, 3rd Community Support Framework.
2012-2013: “Technological Tools for the Promotion of the Transadriatic Archaeological Heritage” – T.Hε.T.A., European Territorial Cooperation Greece-Italy 2007-2013 (INTERREG IV).

The following actions were realized within the project T.Hε.T.A. framework:

  1. studies and laboratory analyses for the conservation of the Roman bath
  2. conservation works on the walls of the bathing complex
  3. interactive map with ancient monuments
  4. conversion of an existing building into a Public Information Center
  5. website creation for the archaeological site of Paleopolis
  6. design and production of printed and digital information material (video, automatic tour guides)
  7. creating educational programs

2. TOUR OPTIONS

A. TOUR AT THE SITE

The archaeological site of Paleopolis is open to the public only in morning hours and upon communication with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu. At the site there are information signs for the visitors.

B. AUDIO-GUIDED TOUR

Guests have the option to obtain auto-guides from the Public Information Center. They are available for free in three languages (Greek, English and Italian).

C. VIRTUAL TOUR AT THE PALEOPOLIS BATHS

3. PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTER

A Public Information Center operates at the archaeological site. It consists of a room with information material regarding the Paleopolis excavations as well as a room for video screenings. Free information brochures are also available.

4. THE PALEOPOLIS-MON REPOS MUSEUM

The tour at the archaeological site of Paleopolis can be pleasantly combined with a visit to the Paleopolis Museum (http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/1/gh152.jsp?obj_id=3463), where visitors can see up closely the most important finds from the excavations in the Paleopolis area.
The museum is housed at the Mon Repos villa and is accessible from the archaeological site within a 10 minute walk.

5. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN

Under the T.He.TA project, an educational program for children aged 6-12 years old was created and implemented. The theme of the program is inspired by the Paleopolis baths and aims to inform children about the history and topography of the ancient city of Kerkyra but also to familiarize them with the habits associated with the public baths.
The educational program is hosted at the Museum of Paleopolis. Interested participants must previously inform the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu. Maximum number of participants 12 persons per group.
